Catacomb of St Valentine
The catacomb originated during the 3rd century with a series of tunnels that developed from a level entrance in the Parioli hillside.
The burial of the eponymous martyr stimulated, during the 4th century, a series of structural modifications, some in the basement where a three-nave basilica with crypt was built, others underground with the creation of two further levels of galleries. At present, the state of conservation of the monument allows only the intermediate floor to be visited.
In the 8th century, immediately after the entrance, a small room dedicated to worship was created with pictorial decoration depicting the Crucifixion, the Virgin and Child and some effigies of saints.
