Among the Christian catacombs of Rome, that of Saint Callixtus, on the Appian Way, is certainly the best known and most visited, attracting thousands of visitors every year from all over the world, eager to discover this evocative and mysterious “underground city”, which takes the visitor back to the origins of the Christian community of Rome. It is, in fact, the Church of Rome’s first community cemetery, conceived and projected by Pope Zephyrinus and the deacon Callixtus, who later succeeded him as Bishop of Rome.
